Luka the superstar independent reader!
During reading rotations one option is information cards about insects. Luka selected a card and wrote down facts and drew a diagram, all independently while I was with reading groups. Fantastic independent learning Luka!
Superhero writing group
The Superhero writing group was remembering to use finger spacing in their writing today. They each had a picture and had to use 2 adjectives to describe the picture.

Sunflowers!
Sunflowers!
We have a science focus of 'living things' this year, so we decided to learn about sunflowers. Last week we planted our own seeds into a clear plastic cup so we can see the germination process. We learnt about soil and nutrients, how deep to plant the seed and how much water to give it. We also have planted seeds that we will give no water, and some seeds that will get no sunlight so we can see what happens to those seeds and compare them to our own that get what they need to live.
Then we learnt about what happens to the seed once it is planted - the germination process, so the students are eagerly awaiting to see the roots in the bottom of their cup. We read a book about the life cycle of the sunflower and then did an activity so we could all recall the process and put the steps into the right order.

Jurxiel has been focusing well during reading rotations. Here she is during the 'informative box' rotation, learning about insects and copying the facts she is learning onto a whiteboard. Fantastic focused learning Jurxiel!
Play based learning/discovery time:
Making the most of a wet Friday inside, we decided to have a discovery time session. Students got to choose either a craft activity or lego, and to try and complete individually or in pairs. There are various learning opportunities within this kind of play including problem solving, persevering, reading instructions, working together, thinking skills, and attempting an activity that is out of their comfort zone or extending their current capabilities. We would like to thank City Books & Lotto for donating the craft and banbao (lego) to C6 to use for learning and play. The students will certainly get a lot of enjoyment out of it!

An impromptu teachable moment!
On Friday morning, Awaiti brought in a praying mantis she had found. So her and Georgia researched what it would need to live, then set out to find the materials to make it an enclosure and find it some bugs to eat. Then they shared with the class and each student took a turn and looking at the praying mantis through a magnifying glass. This links in with our 'living things' science topic perfectly! Ka pai girls!

Life Education with Bernie & Harold!
Today was our first visit to the Life Education van for fun learning with Bernie & Harold the Giraffe. The topic we are learning about this year is "The air we breathe". Ask your child about what they learned today. We will do some follow up learning in class and we will visit again for the last time next Monday. An exciting time in C6 - the students love Bernie & Harold!
